Space strategy games offer much more than fun and entertainment, they can in fact be wonderful learning opportunities. They often include the opportunity to become familiar with the various aspects of astronomy, and because of the manner in which many of the games are designed, they can become very instrumental in helping to build problem solving ability.
The other areas where space strategy games can help, is in the area of cognitive pattern discrimination. With frequent practice, they can also help to sharpen decision making abilities.
Different space strategy games present various types of challenges and different skills may be required in different settings. There are skills required in combat situations, and depending on the degree of difficulty in which the player may be engaged, there may be skills required for navigation or simulation of spacecraft as well as an appreciation for astronomical information. Transferring much of the responses to real world situations, can become beneficial when faced with challenges. It is entirely possible to develop the needed skills of making quick and effective decisions as well as time management and problem-solving by game playing.
The games of this nature can also help to develop an interest in astronomy, and related sciences, and there is much more that can be learned. It may be surprising for many to learn that much of the technology that is now commonplace, have come out of the space exploration program.
